WHAT IS A PIPING WEEKEND?
A weekend dedicated to piping
A Piping Weekend is held the first weekend of December every year with the goal of promoting excellence in and appreciation of bagpipe music.
The workshop on Saturday provides pipers of any experience level the opportunity to learn from a world-class piobaireachd instructor. Please see the Workshop page for more information on how to register for the class. This year on Sunday, A Piping Weekend will hold a solo contest in the morning and, in the afternoon we will present The Arizona Cup For Piobaireachd with prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd. For this inaugural event, participants are required to perform the ground and two variations of a piobaireachd of their choice. There will be food and beverages for sale, a 50/50 and raffle prizes. This is a wonderful opportunity both to perform and to enjoy bagpipe music at the unique Irish Cultural Center. Please contact Leonard Wood at 602.708.1928 with any questions. |
InstructorBruce Gandy
2023 will mark Bruce’s 12th visit to instruct and perform at “A Piping Weekend” In October 2023 both Bruce and his son Alex competed at the Glenfiddich Piping Championship, the equivalent of the solo world championship. This was only the 2nd time in history a father and son competed against each other in this prestigious event. (The other time was also Bruce and Alex in 2018) New for Bruce just this past June is the release of his online learning program called “Essential Piobaireachd Foundations.” The title is self- explanatory and this program comes from his many years of teaching students to bring the program to completion. In addition to the program, Bruce has recorded several Piobaireachds with full video tuition which are on his website as a learning tool for people. Bruce is a full time piping teacher at home in Halifax Nova Scotia. He is one of the most “in demand” teachers on the growing “online network” with over 40-50 students coming online to see him regularly, when he can fit them in. Bruce has embraced technology once again to pioneer a series of Piobaireachd workshops with a class “in house” and students all over the world attending the live streaming to work through Piobs from easier tunes to the classics. Known as the Clubhouse Sessions, this great new innovation now brings the workshop “to the people” versus the people traveling great lengths to a venue. |
